One of the most important — and most frequently overlooked — aspects of wedding photography booking is copyright ownership. Do your wedding photographs belong to you, or to your photographer? The answer is more nuanced than most couples realise.

Under the Copyright Act, 1957 (India), the creator of a work owns the copyright by default. For photographs, this typically means:

• The photographer owns the copyright to the images they create
• This is true even when the photographs are of you and your wedding
• Ownership can only be transferred through a written assignment agreement

What "Copyright" Actually Means

Copyright is the legal right to:

• Reproduce the images (make copies)
• Publish the images commercially
• Display the images publicly
• Create derivative works (edits, crops, stylistic changes)
• License the images to third parties

What Clients Typically Receive

In a standard wedding photography agreement, clients receive a "personal use license" rather than copyright ownership. This means you can:

• Print the photographs for personal use
• Share them on personal social media
• Display them in your home
• Share them with family

But you typically cannot:

• Sell the photographs
• Use them in commercial advertising without the photographer's permission
• Claim authorship
