Great wedding photos don't just happen — they're planned. Here's your complete checklist to prepare for your wedding photography session.

Why Preparation Determines Your Photos' Quality

We have photographed over 1000 weddings at Weddings Mafia. The couples who get the most stunning photographs are almost always the ones who prepared the most thoroughly. Preparation does not mean stiffness or over-staging — it means giving your photographer the best possible conditions to capture your authentic story.

3 Months Before: Foundational Preparation

Share Your Vision Board

Create a curated Pinterest or Instagram board of wedding photographs you love and share it with your photographer. This alignment of aesthetic expectations prevents disappointments and helps your photographer understand your taste — editorial, photojournalistic, romantic, dramatic.

Book Your Venue Recce

At Weddings Mafia, we offer a complimentary venue visit 2-4 weeks before the wedding. We identify the best light sources, interesting architectural elements, and potential challenges so we are not discovering them on the day.

Discuss the Shot List

Prepare a list of specific family combinations and moments that MUST be documented. Important: keep this list focused — 10-15 must-have family groups maximum. An exhaustive list of 50 combinations takes up shooting time and exhausts guests.

1 Week Before: Logistics

Confirm the Timeline with Your Photographer

Share your final wedding timeline. Highlight the most photographically important moments and their scheduled times. Discuss buffer times for inevitable delays.

Assign a Family Coordinator

Designate one family member (not the bride or groom!) whose sole responsibility is to round up family groups for formal portraits quickly. This person saves enormous amounts of time.

Prepare Your Getting-Ready Space

Choose the largest, most naturally lit room available for getting-ready shots. Clear away clutter, keep clothing organised, and ensure the bridal outfit is hung neatly. The getting-ready space is often the source of some of the most intimate, beautiful wedding photographs.

The Day Before: Final Check

  • Steam or iron your outfit and hang it where it will photograph beautifully
  • Lay out all jewellery for detail shots
  • Eat well and rest — exhaustion shows in photographs
  • Do not introduce any new skincare products (allergic reactions happen)
  • Communicate final changes to your photographer via WhatsApp

Weddings Mafia partners with you every step of the way. From consultation to delivery, we ensure a seamless experience.
