The Baraat is the most spectacular procession in Indian weddings. Here's how we capture every moment of the groom's grand entrance.

The Baraat: A Photographer's Greatest Challenge & Opportunity

The Baraat — the groom's wedding procession — is one of the most energetic, chaotic, and visually spectacular events in any Indian wedding. A moving procession of 100-500 guests, dancing to live dhol beats, with the groom at its centre (often on a horse or in a decorated car), presents extraordinary photographic opportunities — and significant technical challenges.

At Weddings Mafia, our team dedicates specific roles and equipment to Baraat coverage. Here is our complete guide.

The Logistics of Baraat Photography

Team Positioning

For Baraat coverage, we deploy 3-4 team members with specific roles:

  • Position 1 — The Advance: Positioned 50m ahead of the procession, shooting back into the approaching Baraat for dramatic wide shots
  • Position 2 — The Groom Close: Within 3-5 metres of the groom, capturing expressions and key moments
  • Position 3 — The Crowd: Moving through the dancing guests, capturing candid joy
  • Position 4 — The Drone: Aerial coverage of the entire procession

Essential Baraat Shots

1. The Groom's Arrival on the Horse/Car

The moment the groom mounts the decorated horse or enters the wedding car. His expression — excitement, pride, nervousness — tells the entire story.

2. The Sehra Spreading in the Wind

A sehra (flower garland worn across the groom's face) moving in the wind creates beautiful, poetic photographs. Use a telephoto lens at 200mm and a fast shutter speed (1/500s minimum) to freeze the movement.

3. The Dancing Brothers and Friends

The groom's friends dancing in front of the procession are usually the most energetic participants. Capture them at the peak of their jumps — full body extension, highest point in the air.

4. The Dhol Players

The dhol players are visual anchors of the Baraat. Get close-up shots of their hands striking the drum and wide shots showing them as part of the procession's flow.

5. The Arrival at the Venue Gate

The moment the Baraat reaches the wedding venue and is welcomed by the bride's family. This transition — from the energy of the procession to the formality of the welcome — is a pivotal photographic moment.

The Baraat deserves cinematic coverage. Weddings Mafia's dedicated Baraat team captures every moment of the groom's grand entrance.
